Getting in and succeeding is a big achievement. If you stay focused and give your best effort, our helpful staff and challenging programs will guide you in building the skills you need for college.

Throughout high school, we’ll support and help prepare you. We just ask that you:

  • Stick Around: Stay in the program from when you join until you graduate high school, including:
    • Summer Learning: Spend six weeks each summer in our academic program at LSU.
    • Saturday Meetups: Attend 24 Saturday Academy sessions during the school year.
  • Maintain Good Grades: Perform well in your high school classes.
  • Stay Involved: Enroll in pre-college courses and participate in our monthly events.

Your commitment to these things will make your time in LSU’s Upward Bound program a rewarding experience and set you up for success in college and beyond.

Yearly Progression

First year

In LSU’s Upward Bound program, we kick off your journey by covering the building blocks for your academic path ahead:

  • career exploration
  • financial literacy
  • academic practices.

You’ll also join mentoring sessions with your peers to talk about your goals, practice your communication skills, and get a feel for the college environment. Get ready to start strong!

Sophomore year

Second-year students in LSU’s Upward Bound program will broaden their understanding and dive into these subjects:

  • career assessments
  • identifying ideal workplace environments
  • budgeting
  • learning strategies
  • leadership development
  • stress management.

Get ready to explore and grow!

Junior year

Third-year students will shift towards a college mindset. This means:

  • focusing on developing critical thinking skills
  • searching for scholarships
  • enhancing ACT scores
  • finding the perfect college fit.

Setting and sticking to a college application timeline will be a crucial goal this year. Get ready to take the next step toward your college journey!

Senior year

During one’s senior year, students are laser-focused on crossing the finish line with key priorities including:

  • completing college and scholarship applications
  • achieving their best ACT scores
  • meeting FAFSA deadlines

Additionally, students dive into:

  • understanding college costs
  • honing problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • adopting good habits for success as college students
