LSU’s Manship School Professor To Speak on Fake News

Baton Rouge, LA – LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication and Friends of the Louisiana Old State Capitol are jointly hosting, “Russia and Fake News: From Louisiana to the World” on Tuesday, Feb. 5 at the Louisiana State Archives auditorium on Essen Lane.

Leonard Apcar, a former New York Times editor who holds LSU’s Wendell Gray Switzer Jr. Endowed Chair in Media Literacy at the Manship School will outline developments in fake news and social media including an obscure fake news report believed to have been orchestrated from Russia involving a chemical plant explosion in Louisiana. He will also offer tips on how to detect fake news.

“Fake news is a problem which is why we’re seeing social media outlets and the government trying to thwart it,” Apcar said. “I think that underscores the importance of people everywhere learning how to ensure that what they read is true.”
