LSU Health Shreveport Unveils $79M Center for Medical Education
LSU Health Shreveport unveiled its transformative new Center for Medical Education on Dec. 11, 2023. The $79 million structure is designed to enhance the educational experience and interdisciplinary collaboration for students and faculty. Constructed in part to support the advancement of medical education in North Louisiana, the new facility aligns perfectly with the biomedical priority of LSU's Scholarship First Agenda.
NIH Grant to Help LSU Researchers Fight Youth Obesity Using Virtual and Real-Life Tools
LSU Kinesiology Professor Senlin Chen, PhD, and his team are developing a novel obesity prevention program to use in Louisiana schools, combining such tactics as virtual pets and coaches with the best science to encourage healthy behaviors. Funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health, Chen’s ProudMe intervention integrates daily experiences in virtual and real life to influence behaviors, followed by an assessment of outcomes.
Our Challenge
- About one in three people are diagnosed with cancer at some time in their life, and about one in five dies of cancer.
- A total of 1.9 million new cancer cases and 609,360 deaths from cancer are expected to occur in the U.S. in 2022, which is about 1,670 deaths a day.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the overall obesity rate among U.S. adults is 41.9 percent. More than 38 percent of Louisiana residents are obese. The economic effect is substantial, costing the U.S. healthcare system nearly $173 billion a year.
- According to the U.S. Bureau Of Labour Statistics (BLS), the demand for biomedical engineers has grown by 14% in 2020.

The first-ever residential summer camp for high schoolers offered by LSU Eunice in partnership with Acadiana Workforce Solutions and Ochsner Health—the Future Med Pros Boot Camp—taught Destinee Bellard healthcare skills she used right away.
Three-time LSU alum Carrie Elks has advice for aspiring researchers at LSU: If you get the chance, "Play for the home team!” Elks embodied that advice by studying at LSU and now as an assistant professor and researcher at Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
