How to Report & Your Role in the Conduct Process

When in doubt, make a report.

Sharing a concern or issue is an important first step in the conduct process. It allows the university to assess the concern and determine resources or investigative steps, with the ultimate goal of ensuring safety, support, and accountability.

We encourage you to report your concerns as soon as possible.

  1. Select the misconduct or concern you are reporting on LSU Cares.
  2. Attach course syllabus and/or relevant documentation.
    1. To report a possible Academic Violation, faculty must include the following information and assign an “I” grade pending the official outcome from the SAA office.:
      1. A written summary or explanation of the alleged violation.
      2. Please include your desired grade impact.  For example, no credit for the assignment or no credit for the class
      3. A copy of the course syllabus
      4. A copy of the assignment directions
      5. A copy of the assignment in question.  If the assignment is a paper, please mark the areas of concern and provide a copy of the suspected source.
  3. Submit the report and follow the Next Steps below.

  1. For academic assignment related reports, faculty should assign an “I” grade to any assignment referred to SAA.  If a student is found responsible for the alleged violation, the outcome letter will contain the final grade determination.*
  2. After a misconduct report is submitted, it comes to Student Advocacy & Accountability and a case is created and assigned to a hearing officer.
  3. The student will be sent an accountability meeting letter from the hearing officer, and the instructor will receive a Faculty Memo Letter.
  4. The student will meet with the hearing officer to share any information they have regarding the reported incident.
  5. Following the meeting, the hearing officer may contact the faculty member for additional information and/or to discuss outcomes for the case.
  6. The hearing officer will make a decision on the case and send an outcome letter to the student. The hearing officer will also send a Faculty Memo to the instructor for the outcome of the case. If the student's outcome involves a grade change, the instructor should update the grade as soon as possible.

*The faculty member must adhere to the grade impact imposed by SAA. The majority of Academic case referrals come at the end of each semester. Consequently, a case may not be resolved before final grade reports are due to the University Registrar.  If this occurs, the Code requires that you submit an “I” grade, pending the official outcome from the SAA office.

Once a student has been reported for academic misconduct, please do not issue the student a grade for the work in question. If we are nearing the end of the semester, you are approved to issue an incomplete "I" grade until the matter is resolved.

Once a decision has been made, you will receive an email that will inform you of the decision. You can then go in and adjust the student's grade appropriately. If you need to change the student's grade back from an "I" grade, you can do so by going to myLSU, Instructional Support, then Grade Correction.

Any member of the University faculty, staff, student body, or community may submit a written misconduct complaint (referred to as a Referral) to Student Advocacy & Accountability (SAA) when they believe a student may have violated the Code of Student Conduct.

Individuals with a reasonable basis to believe a violation has occurred should submit this information to SAA through the online referral form at lsu.edu/concern.

Official reports from LSUPD, Residential Life, other University departments, and external law enforcement agencies are also accepted as Referrals.

After receiving a Referral, an SAA Official may follow up with the reporting party to gather additional information and explain relevant next steps within the conduct process. As part of due process, SAA will share the Referral with the alleged student so they understand the concerns being reviewed.

Upon receiving information that a student may have violated the Code, SAA may conduct an investigation or proceed with the appropriate resolution process based on the nature of the allegation.

The Conduct Process at LSU

The Conduct Process is in place to determine if a student is responsible for violating the Student Conduct Code or other campus regulations. The process is comprehensive, inclusive, and intends to educate and empower students to take responsibility for their choices, take steps toward resolution, and develop their personal standards in pursuit of academic and personal integrity.
