Weather Safety Tips

April 09, 2024

Dear LSU Community,

As we keep an eye on the weather forecast for tomorrow, we want to ensure the safety of our students, faculty and staff. Please review the following weather safety tips:

Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts and stay aware of any severe weather alerts or flood warnings issued for your area.

Have a Plan: Familiarize yourself with the university's severe weather and flood procedures by visiting the LSU Office of Emergency Preparedness website.

Seek Shelter: During severe weather or flooding, seek shelter in a sturdy building on higher ground. Avoid areas prone to flooding, such as basements or ground floors.

Avoid Flooded Areas: Do not walk or drive through flooded areas. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of water can sweep your vehicle away.

Stay Away from Rivers and Streams: Avoid rivers, streams, and other bodies of water during severe weather and flooding. They can quickly overflow and become dangerous.

Have an Emergency Kit: Keep an emergency kit with essential supplies, such as water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, and a first aid kit.

Stay Connected: Keep your phone charged and have a way to receive emergency alerts, such as a weather radio or a smartphone app.

Check on Others: Look out for your fellow students, faculty, and staff, especially those who may need assistance during severe weather and flooding.

Follow Up: After the severe weather has passed, check for university updates for any additional instructions or information.
