LSU Named One of Nation’s New Distinguished Military Colleges
September 30, 2026
BATON ROUGE – A memorandum from the Secretary of War announced that LSU has been selected as one of the nation’s Distinguished Military Colleges through America’s Corps of Cadets, a federal initiative designed to expand the number of institutions preparing students for military and civic leadership and create a pathway toward Senior Military College status.
The designation recognizes institutions with strong histories of leadership development and military tradition. By joining America's Corps of Cadets, LSU earns the prestigious "Honor School" status, which grants priority in officer commissioning and helps grow its Corps of Cadets program.
“LSU’s history has long been tied to service, leadership and preparing graduates to meet the needs of our state and nation,” said LSU Chancellor Jim Dalton. “This designation recognizes that long-standing commitment, and positions LSU to build on that legacy for the next generation of military and civilian leaders.”
Founded in 1860 as the Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy, LSU has maintained a deep connection to military education and service for more than 160 years. Generations of LSU graduates have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and the university continues to support students pursuing military leadership through its Corps of Cadets, ROTC, and related programs.
According to the memorandum, the Office of the Secretary of War will begin implementation within 30 days. LSU joins Hillsdale College, Liberty University, Mississippi State University and Tuskegee University in the initial Distinguished Military College cohort.
