A New Stage for LSU Excellence: John G. Turner & Hango G. Fischer Recital Hall Opens

LSU celebrated the opening of the renovated John G. Turner & Hango G. Fischer Recital Hall on Sept. 10, achieving the vision for bringing enhanced acoustics, a new recording studio, updated seating and modernized technology to one of the college’s most active spaces. Each year, nearly 180 student recitals take place in the hall, alongside faculty performances, recruitment events and programs that connect campus with the broader community.

 “John and Hango’s generosity through this project gives our students and faculty a world-class environment to hone their craft while sharing enriching performing arts experiences with communities across Louisiana and beyond,” said LSU Chancellor Jim Dalton. “They and fellow donors to this project understand that excellent spaces attract and retain excellent talent.”

The newly renovated recital hall is designed to support excellence at every stage of a student’s experience.

“This hall is where preparation becomes performance,” said Music & Dramatic Arts Dean Eric Lau. “Every music student will have a connection to this space, whether they are taking the stage, supporting a classmate or learning from our faculty. It gives us an environment equal to the talent of our students and faculty and makes that talent more visible and accessible to the people we serve.”

The recital hall renovation is catalyzed by Turner and Fischer’s landmark philanthropic commitment in 2018. Their $4 million gift, the largest in the college’s history, also established the John G. Turner & Hango G. Fischer Center for Opera and expanded on their endowed scholarship support that has benefited more than 110 LSU students. In recognition of their valued, impactful contributions, Turner and Fischer were recently awarded honorary doctorates by the college during LSU’s summer commencement.

“LSU’s talented musicians deserve a space that reflects the brilliance they bring to their work,” said Turner. “Our support has always been about investing in students, faculty and the artistic excellence that makes LSU special.”

“Our hope is that this hall will be a place where LSU students discover their potential and where our community has the opportunity to experience the depth of their artistry,” added Fischer.

The John G. Turner & Hango G. Fischer Recital Hall is the latest result of LSU’s broader investment in modernized spaces that support elite experiences across campus while expanding access to the opportunities that define an LSU education.
