LSU Reilly Center to Host BASF Silverberg Sustainability Initiative

September 22, 2022

BATON ROUGE—The Reilly Center for Media & Public Affairs at LSU’s Manship School of Mass Communication will host the BASF Silverberg Sustainability Initiative to engage and educate the LSU community on sustainability development goals outlined by the United Nations. This event is in partnership with LSU’s College of Engineering and the E.J. Ourso College of Business.

The conversation will engage in cross-campus learning opportunities in the form of classroom visits, small-group meetings and a panel of subject matter experts hosted during Global Sustainability Week to encourage a collaborative, collegial and evidence-based conversation.

“BASF is pleased to have the opportunity to engage students and the general public on important and timely topics such as sustainability,” said BASF Senior Vice President and General Manager Jerry Lebold. “Creating chemistry for a sustainable future is at the core of our business and operations. We look forward to teaming up with the Reilly Center and Manship School to host this event and bring together journalists, scholars and professionals to explore ways we can effectively communicate with students, businesses and the public about sustainability.”

The BASF Silverberg Sustainability Initiative was created by the partnership of Dr. Joel Silverberg, whose father—the namesake of the series—was an LSU journalism graduate, and BASF, who contributed $20,000 to fund the planning and development of the series.

“I am thrilled to have been a part of developing this series and reinforcing my family's commitment to the study and practice of journalism in our state,” said Dr. Silverberg. “The goal of this was to work on connecting and building relationships across campus between the journalism department and science department early on in students’ careers in order to foster a foundation of trust and mutual understanding. I hope these relationships will help to advance a better understanding of the issues surrounding sustainability and environmental stewardship for the citizens of Louisiana.”

The event is Thursday, Sept. 22, at 5:30 p.m. CT in the RoyOMartin Auditorium in Patrick F. Taylor Hall on the campus of Louisiana State University. Admission is free and open to the public. Reserve your seat here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/383081225257. There will be a door prize raffled off by BASF, drawn from the pre-registered guest list. You must be present to win. The event will be livestreamed on the Reilly Center’s Facebook page.

Parking is available at the Union Square Garage, which can be accessed from East Campus Drive. Visitor parking is available on the second, third and fourth floors of the garage for $1.50 per hour on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
