Manship senior places second in Hearst Awards TV Features Competition

Manship senior Taylor Curet has placed second in the TV Features Competition of the Hearst Journalism Awards Program.

“I was excited and proud when Cindy Carter called and told me the news,” said Curet. “Personally, I was proud because I finished 11th in last year’s Hearst Awards, so it was nice to see I’ve improved the second go-round.”

Curet submitted two stories for the competition that he did as a part of MC 4260 Long-Format Video Production course taught by Cindy Carter last spring. The first story submitted was about Caley Oquist, a LSU swimmer who was inspired to make the LSU swim team after her mother passed away from cancer. “This story was definitely the most emotional piece I’ve worked on, but also the most gratifying because of how much Caley said it meant to her,” said Curet. “Not coincidentally, I put more thought and effort into this story than any other one I’ve done.” The second story Curet submitted takes a look at what happens when the homeless pass away. “The story is about funerals put on for the forgotten,” he said.

“I am proud to represent LSU and the Manship School because I’ve learned so much from professors like Cindy Carter and Tad Odell, and also from working with Tiger TV,”said Curet. “It’s nice to see LSU get some recognition because there isn’t a school or program I’d rather be a part of.”

The top five winners of the TV Features Competition will submit additional TV feature stories for the semi-final round of judging in March. Following the semi-finals, five television finalists will be chosen to participate in the 2016 Championship in San Francisco, along with the radio, writing, photojournalism and multimedia finalists.

The 56th annual Hearst Journalism Awards Program is held in 108 member universities of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication with accredited undergraduate journalism programs. The Broadcast News Competition was added in 1988 to Program which also includes writing, photojournalism, and multimedia competitions and offers awards totaling up to $500,000.
