LSU CAS Director Dr. Gloria Thomas Reflects on First 90 Days

Baton Rouge, La. November 27, 2017 - As the LSU fall semester wraps up, Center for Academic Success director, Gloria Thomas, Ph.D., reflects on her first 90 days of getting to know the nationally-recognized organization, guiding changes and creating partnerships to increase academic success for students at LSU.

“One challenge I’m thinking a lot about is how to increase the number of LSU students we impact while also providing tailored services and resources for individuals and groups,” Thomas explained. “I’m also eager to engage faculty and staff across the campus in collaborative partnerships that promote academic success.”

Prior to joining CAS, Thomas served as the executive director of research, education and mentoring programs in the LSU Office of Strategic Initiatives with oversight of education, mentoring and diversity programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics across K-12 to graduate student levels.  Additionally, she served as an adjunct assistant professor in the LSU Department of Chemistry.

Thomas received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Southern University and A&M College, and a doctorate in chemistry at LSU.  She was a National Research Council postdoctoral felow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology and an assistant professor at Mississippi State University and Xavier University of Louisiana.

“LSU Student Success is thrilled to have Dr. Thomas as part of our team,” said Melissa Brocato, LSU Student Success vice president.  “Her strong leadership, teaching and research experience, knowledge of both the campus and LSU student needs made her ideal for the CAS Director position.  She has already made strides to build and strengthen CAS partnerships on campus, and I know she will continue to improve those relationships in the future.”
