Allison Sommers
Career Coach
As a first-generation college student, navigating the post-secondary education landscape felt like an uphill battle through graduation, both times I did it! Not having the familial wealth of knowledge on “how to college” consistently told me that college was not for me. However, I fell in love with the possibility of what could be, so I went out and made it my own. I got involved, I attached myself to mentors, I said yes (to a few too many things), and I carved out my piece of the place I always wanted to be, LSU.
I continue to choose to work in higher education because I still feel that magical feeling each day in this work. Helping others construct their college experience and skills for beyond graduation is such a fun and fulfilling calling.

My Ready to Roar advice
Don’t let the Ready to Roar Career proficiencies scare you! For each proficiency, I’m confident you have experience already. Have siblings? I bet you have navigated conflict. Been to a museum? I’m sure you gained some global perspectives there. Ever played a team sport? That’s teamwork! Registered for classes? That’s digital literacy.
Take stock of what experiences you have already and build on those lessons learned and skills formed. As you gain more experience, you can add more tools to your toolbelt and sharpen the ones already there. Stay roaring!
Going green
I paid my student loans off with strategic budgeting and couponing. Now those help my piggy bank and allow me to donate to local animal shelters or the LSU Food Pantry. Sustainability is my newest personal value. I am constantly wondering what small efforts I can make to create a larger scale impact: recycling, thrifting, sewing before throwing, no plastic grocery bags.
My claim to fame
I am a 4-time FRIENDS trivia champion. My last victory was Thanksgiving episodes only. That’s 10 episodes out of 234. Oh, and I got a perfect score on that one too.
