July 01, 2026

Guoqiang Li has been named Associate Dean for Research in the LSU College of Engineering.
LSU Mechanical Engineering Professor Guoqiang Li will serve as the new Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering where he will work closely with Dean Vicki Colvin to grow the college’s research enterprise across every department. He will also lead the College of Engineering Research Working Group, support faculty as they develop competitive proposals and new partnerships and help faculty teams pursue large center-scale research.
Li completed his postdoctoral training in Mechanical Engineering at LSU in 1997 and has previously served as Associate Vice Chancellor/President in the Office of Strategic Initiatives, and as Associate Vice Provost in the LSU Graduate School. He also holds the title of Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Southern University in Baton Rouge. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), and the International Academy of Artificial Intelligence Sciences (AAIS).
His research interests span engineering materials, manufacturing, and engineering mechanics. A list of his patents and publications is available on his Google Scholar and Scopus profiles. He currently serves as an Associate Editor for the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering, Elsevier’s Cleaner Materials, and Smart Materials and Devices (Science Exploration); as Specialty Editor for “Solid and Structural Mechanics” for Frontiers in Mechanical Engineering; and as an Editorial Board Member for five additional journals. He has received more than 40 awards and recognitions for his research, mentoring, and service.
“Dr. Li knows this college from the inside out,” Colvin said. “Nearly three decades here gives him a perspective on how to build research programs in the College of Engineering. He also brings us university-level leadership that will serve us well as the success of our graduate programs is intertwined with our success in research.”
Li said he is eager to build on the college’s research strengths while creating new opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
“I am honored to serve as Associate Dean for Research for the College of Engineering,” Li said. “I look forward to working closely with our exceptional faculty, staff, students, and research partners to strengthen our research enterprise, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and expand opportunities for innovation and discovery. By building on the college’s outstanding research strengths and developing strategic partnerships with government, industry, and academia, we will continue to increase the impact of our research while educating the next generation of engineering leaders.”
