Biography
Gregory Smith serves as a Professional-in-Residence in Collaborative Piano at the Louisiana State University School of Music. A versatile collaborator, he embraces a diverse range of styles in both instrumental and vocal repertoires. He is keenly interested in the promotion of modern and contemporary works and the performance of new compositions.
Smith has enjoyed participation at a variety of national and international festivals, including SongFest, the Toronto Summer Music Academy’s “Art of Song” program, the Cincinnati Song Initiative’s “Fellowship of the Song,” the Source Song Festival in Minneapolis, the Texas Chamber Music Institute in Forth Worth, TX, and the Finger Lakes Opera in Rochester, NY. Notably, he served as a répétiteur for the Aspen Music Festival and School’s 2024 and 2025 seasons, assisting in productions of Hänsel und Gretel and La bohème.
Together with violinist Ciara McGuire and cellist Aaron Lieberman, Smith is the founding pianist of the Vantage Trio. The trio participated in the 2025 Plowman Chamber Music Competition, where they received a Judges’ Special Recognition, and the 2025 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. The Vantage Trio is devoted to exploring both standard repertoire and works by composers from under-represented communities.
Originally from Pampa, Texas, Smith received his Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Andrew Harley. He received his Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance from Brigham Young University, studying with Stephen Beus and Jeffrey Shumway. Additionally, Smith also served as a teaching assistant in the undergraduate music theory department at Eastman and received an Advanced Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy.
