SLIS prepares graduates for 21st century opportunities and challenges of preserving our cultural heritage, organizing and managing information, providing instruction in accessing and using information, teaching early literacy skills and encouraging reading and lifelong learning, and creating welcoming community and public spaces and places.
The SLIS MLIS degree has been fully accredited since 1931, and is the only MLIS degree
in the state of Louisiana. Students may choose from among eight professional specializations
or pursue a general degree. SLIS also offers Graduate Certificates in Records and
Information Management and School Librarianship, as well as a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate
and undergraduate minor in Library Science.
All degrees, certificates and minors can be earned entirely online.
SLIS graduates are currently working as academic librarians, archivists, information managers, public librarians, records managers, researchers, school librarians, systems analysts, and web analysts in corporations, government agencies, not-for-profit organizations, museums, and academic, public and school libraries nationwide and in more than 20 countries internationally.
