Patricia QueirozThe LSU School of Veterinary Medicine has appointed Patricia Queiroz-Williams, DVM, MS, as the new Chief Veterinary Medical Officer. Dr. Queiroz-Williams is also professor and service chief of veterinary anesthesia and analgesia and has served as interim hospital director since February 2025.

The Chief Veterinary Medical Officer (CVMO) provides strategic leadership and oversight for the clinical, educational, and research missions of the LSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) and associated clinical programs. The CVMO ensures the highest standards of patient care, veterinary education, and research while fostering collaboration among faculty, staff, and students. This position plays a critical role in advancing the school's reputation and impact in veterinary medicine and providing leadership for the hospital and clinical operations.

Dr. Queiroz-Williams received her DVM from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (Brazil) in 1996 and her MS from the Universidade Estadual Paulista School of Medicine (Brazil) in 2002. She successfully completed a Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia residency program at the College of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Tennessee in 2007. She joined the faculty at LSU Vet Med in August 2007.

One of her career highlights came in 2016, when Dr. Queiroz-Williams was in charge of anesthesia for Mike VI during his treatment for spindle cell sarcoma. About that experience, Dr. Queiroz said, “Mike was a celebrity, and we needed to prepare ourselves in advance. And if you think you are prepared, you need to go back and prepare a little more -with Plans B, C, and D.”

As for the VTH, Dr. Queiroz-Williams says, “Communication is the key. In the hospital, whether it’s veterinarians, students, technicians, residents, or interns, we need to communicate all the time - especially when cases are complex and patients are fragile.”

LSU Vet Med Dean Oliver Garden, BVetMed, PhD, FHEA, FCPP, FRCVS, DACVIM, DECVIM-CA, said, “Dr. Queiroz-Williams brings exceptional clinical expertise, a deep commitment to patient safety, and a collaborative leadership style to this role. Her ability to unite teams across disciplines while advancing excellence in education, clinical care, and research makes her the ideal leader for our Veterinary Teaching Hospital and clinical programs.”
