LSU Vet Med celebrates One Health Day (Nov. 3) every day

One Health is the concept that recognizes that the health of people, animals, and the environment are closely linked and dependent on each other, and the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is uniquely placed to educate people about this concept due to our interdisplinary nature, which focuses on the health of people and animals, as well as sustainability.
Animal Health
LSU Vet Med specializes in animal health, educating future veterinarians every day about numerous diseases and injuries, including how to recognize, prevent, and treat them. By addressing animal health issues, veterinarians contribute directly to preventing the transmission of diseases from animals to people.
Human Health
LSU Vet Med researchers are also investigating diseases that affect people and how these diseases are transmitted. For example, at LSU Vet Med we are researching West Nile virus, chikungunya, COVID, COPD, and Zika, as well as DNA repair, vaping, and alcohol and chemical dependency.
Environmental Health
LSU Vet Med has toxicologists who investigate harmful agents, and our Wildlife Hospital of Louisiana treats and releases injured wildlife back into their natural habitats.
Veterinarians are trained not only to care for animals but to also protect public health by educating the public about the importance of responsible pet ownership, food safety, and the role animals play in our daily lives to contribute to community health. Our researchers strive to improve the lives of people and animals, as well as educate people about disease transmission and prevention. Veterinary schools can provide a global perspective on health, and we hope that everyone takes a moment today to reflect on the connection between animals, people, and the environment and how we should care for them all.
