Student Athlete Documentary Screening

Please join the Ethics Institute on Tuesday, October 29th from 6-8 pm in 130 Nicholson Hall for a screening and discussion of the HBO Sports film Student Athlete

Should NCAA athletes be paid for their play? Should we think of that play as labor, or athletes as employees of the university? If universities generate money or corporations make profit off of athletes' names and likenesses, should players be entitled to do so as well? Does the idea of a "student athlete" make sense within the context of a multi-billion dollar college sports industry? Are NCAA athletes treated as students or as athletes first? We'll consider these questions and more with a screening of the HBO Sports film Student Athlete. The film will be followed by a discussion led by Dr. Chris Wells, a Philosophy instructor.

Film Description: Student Athlete is an examination of the complex rules of amateur athletics in America and how they affect uncompensated athletes and their families. Unpaid college athletes generate billions of dollars for their institutions every year. Student Athlete examines the world of high-revenue college sports through the stories of four young men at different stages of their athletic careers, as well as a coach-turned-advocate.
