Documentary Screening Recap

Over 70 students, faculty, and staff members attended the screening of the HBO Sports documentary Student Athlete on Tuesday, October 29th. The film examined the rules of amateur athletics in the United States and the lives of players affected by those rules.

After the film, Dr. Chris Wells led a discussion about the documentary and the issues it raises. Attendees were eager to discuss the obstacles that student athletes face on a day-to-day basis and questioned if or how students should be compensated. Several students reflected upon their own experiences as student-athletes and the unique circumstances of that role. The discussion soon turned to the legal issues surrounding paying student-athletes, and university athletics more generally.

Students walked away remarking that the event presented "a nice video for awareness of what student athletes go through" and that the topic was "very interesting, not something I think about usually."
