This February, Liu began serving his four-year term as a member of their section Steering Group.

Liu is one of several College of the Coast & Environment representatives who are AAAS Fellows including Professor and Dean Chris D’Elia, LSU Boyd Professor Harry Roberts, and Professor and Shell Endowed Chair in Oceanography and Wetland Studies Nancy Rabalais. Liu is proud to be able to serve both his discipline and AAAS in his new role as member-at-large.

“I would like to encourage colleagues in LSU’s College of the Coast & Environment, the Department of Geology & Geophysics, the Department of Geography & Anthropology, and other cognate units on campus to organize symposia at AAAS annual meetings. I would also like to see more eligible colleagues at LSU to be nominated to become AAAS Fellows,” Liu said.

“Dr. Liu plays an essential role in our college. He is an internationally renowned expert in his field. Considered the “father” of paleotempestology, he has received more than thirty NSF and other research grants to support his work. On top of that, he chairs a first-rate academic department in our great university, teaches classes, and supervises graduate students and postdocs. I know that he will represent LSU well as he undertakes this new professional service role at AAAS,” D’Elia said.

Liu has been a member of AAAS for about 40 years and has been an AAAS Fellow since 2008. Previously, he served as a member of the AAAS Electorate Nominating Committee of the Section on Geology & Geography from 2008 to 2011. AAAS is the world's largest multidisciplinary scientific society and publisher of the globally renowned academic journal, Science. AAAS has members in more than 91 countries around the globe.
