Position Overview
LSU Vet Med invites applications for Head of the Department of Pathobiological Sciences
(PBS). The Head will guide a dynamic department with strengths in microbiology, immunology,
cancer biology, and pathology. The department is a national leader in biomedical research
and graduate education, training MS, PhD, and DVM students, and supporting residency
training towards board certification by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists
(ACVP). The Head oversees all academic and research activities, and supports faculty,
staff, and students while maintaining an active, externally funded research program.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Administration
- Provide strategic direction and long-term planning for the department, with a vision
supportive of all constituents.
- Oversee teaching, research, service, and outreach programs.
- Manage departmental budgets, personnel, facilities, and resources.
- Ensure compliance with university policies and promote a safe, supportive environment.
- Serve as primary liaison to the Dean.
Academic & Research Oversight
- Support excellence in professional (DVM) and graduate education.
- Promote faculty research productivity and extramural funding.
- Strengthen and expand graduate and postgraduate training programs.
- Foster interdisciplinary and extramural collaborations.
Faculty & Staff Development
- Recruit, mentor, and evaluate faculty and staff.
- Recommend appointments, promotions, tenure, and salary actions.
- Encourage professional development and a collaborative departmental culture.
- Build and supervise an effective administrative and technical support team.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- PhD, DVM, VMD, MD, or equivalent in a biomedical discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a veterinary school or health sciences center.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including fiscal and personnel management.
Additional Expectations
- Credentials suitable for appointment as a full professor and LSU Graduate Faculty
member.
- Record of sustained extramural funding with the expectation of maintaining an active
research program in one of the departmental areas of research focus.
- Strong communication skills with a team-building mentality.
