Sophomore Savannah Knighton selected for National Athletic Trainers’ Association Scholarship

LSU Athletic Training sophomore Savannah Knighton was recently selected to receive the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) District IX Patty and Chuck Kimmel Scholarship through the NATA Foundation. The Pottstown, Pa. native will receive it at the National Leadership Committee for Athletic Training (NATA) conference in June.
“It’s great to see Ms. Knighton being recognized for her leadership abilities in and out of the classroom,” LSU College of Human Sciences & Education Dean Damon Andrew said. “We are honored to have Ms. Knighton represent our college while striving to improve athletic training education across the country."
Knighton was selected in January to serve as the District IX representative for NATA, serving a two year term that begins in June. As district representative, she is responsible for working with students in Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky; students may go to her with issues to present to the committee as a whole or bring it up to NATA.
Knighton gained experience in athletic training while working with the LSU Volleyball team during their 2016 season. After graduating from LSU, she plans on becoming a Certified Athletic Trainer and to continue her education by earning her master’s degree. Her goal is to eventually work in collegiate athletics and possibly research improving the safety of sports. She also earned President’s Honor Roll in fall 2016, received the fall 2016 athletic training scholar award, and is a member of the Phi Sigma Pi honors society.
The NATA Student Leadership Committee (SLC) acts as a voice for students within the athletic training community, working as a liaison between students pursuing athletic training and the national association. The SLC also tries to promote learning about issues impacting the athletic training profession, getting involved in volunteer opportunities and taking a stand on matters impacting students in the present and future. As a committee, they offer information, encouragement and advice to fellow students.
SLC is also are responsible for implementing educational and networking opportunities for students at the NATA convention. They host the athletic training student seminar at the convention and the SLC students serve as the moderators.
