Dr. Allaway is the director of the Women’s Physiology Research Lab. Her research focuses
on the impact of various physiological and psychological stressors on the reproductive
system and downstream consequences on the musculoskeletal system and exercise performance
across the lifespan, from menarche to menopause and after. In particular, Dr. Allaway
focuses on hormonal contraception use, change in energy status, mode of exercise,
microgravity/unloading, internal and external psychological factors, and ethnic background
as critical factors in her research program.
A parallel area of Dr. Allaway’s research involves understanding factors that lead
young girls and women to leave sports and developing strategies to increase the awareness
and education of athletes regarding the Athlete Triad. This research has the ultimate
goal of informing evidence-based strategies to promote healthy participation in physical
activity and preventing young girls and women from leaving sport participation.
