Graduate Oral Presentation Symposium winner Anissa Hyde

BATON ROUGE - CC&E celebrated the semester with a look at student research yesterday, with a program of graduate student oral presentations and undergraduate poster presentations.

The winner of the Oral Presentation Symposium was Anissa Hyde, a Masters student in the  Department of Environmental Sciences, who spoke on “Building A Complex Socio-Ecological Dataset:  Data Wrangling Strategies and Challenges for Climate-Induced Migration.”

Second place went to Mischa Schultz of the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences, or DOCS, for her presentation on "Greater Amberjack (Seriola dumerili) life history in the northern Gulf of Mexico" and third prize went to Daoyang Bao, also of DOCS, for "Quantifying Compound and Nonlinear Effects of Hurricane-induced Flooding using a Coupled Hydrological-Ocean Model."

The winner of the Undergraduate Poster Presentation Symposium was Patricia Thibodeaux, with her poster entitled, “Comparing arthropod and plant communities across natural and created brackish marshes in coastal Louisiana.”

Second place went to Jonathan Russell for his poster, "A Machine-Learning Approach to Forecasting Gulf Of Mexico Tropical Cyclone Activity" and third place went to James Anderson, for "Hurricanes and Harmful Algal Blooms: Assessing the Legacy Phosphorus Role in Linking These Events."

“Congratulations to our winners and to all participants in the graduate and undergraduate symposiums,” said CC&E Associate Dean of Academics Sibel Bargu Ates. “Communication is essential for scientists. We must be able to conduct good research, and then share the knowledge we’ve created, and the impact it may have, with the world. The presentations we saw today demonstrated just how well our students have mastered these crucial skills.”

Topics in both presentations ranged from 2016 Baton Rouge floods to the modeling of phytoplankton to the detection of chemicals in fish liver.

A complete list of participants and topics is below.
