Announcing the 2021 Recipients of the William H. Patrick, Jr., Scholarship for Wetlands Expertise

May 20, 2021

In Louisiana, our community is keenly aware of the contributions that wetlands make to our way of life each and every day. Here along the Mississippi River Delta, these fascinating and fragile ecosystems support livelihoods; offer recreation; and provide essential habitat for birds, waterfowl, and aquatic life.

With that in mind, the College of the Coast & Environment would like to congratulate Jay Merrill and Benjamin Farmer, the 2021 recipients of the William H. Patrick, Jr., Scholarship for Wetlands Expertise. This award recognizes students in the Department of Oceanography & Coastal Sciences who are studying wetlands and have greater than a 3.5 GPA.

Dr. Ruth Patrick established the William H. Patrick, Jr., Scholarship for Wetlands Expertise in memory of esteemed LSU Boyd Professor Bill Patrick. Dr. Bill Patrick joined LSU’s faculty in 1953. In 1977, he moved his research facilities to the Center for Wetland Resources and established the Institute of Wetland Biogeochemistry. For 23 years, he served as the director of the institute and was recognized by the Institute for Scientific Information as being among the world's most cited scientists. In 1978, he became a Boyd Professor, LSU's highest academic honor.
