Currently, the associate director of the Office of Global Strategy and Initiatives (GSI) at Emory University, Tavaras has significantly contributed to the advancement of Emory’s global strategies. Through her work with GSI, she has gained experience in a myriad of internationalization methods including program development. Tavaras played a fundamental role in the implementation of Passport to Emory, a pre-departure orientation program for undergraduate, graduate, and professional students in China and South Korea. 

Tavaras brings an extensive background in the world of international education to this role. Prior to joining the GSI team at Emory, Tavaras served as a study abroad advisor for the university where she focused on non-traditional locations and diversity and inclusion in international education. Previously, she also served as the resident director for the Critical Language Scholarship Program in Jordan. 

A native of Atlanta, Tavaras is an alumna of Emory where she obtained a B.A. in international studies. She also holds an M.A. in international human rights law from the American University in Cairo and a Juris Master focused on international law from Emory Law School. In addition, Tavaras was a program associate at The Carter Center on the Democracy Program’s Democratic Election Standards project; she served as a contributing writer for Mic and Ramel Media; and was published in 2015 as a co-author of the article “Indiscriminate Power: Racial Profiling and Surveillance since 9/11” in the University of Pennsylvania’s Journal of Law and Social Change. 

Tavaras will officially assume her role on November 29.
