International Programs Welcomes New Study Abroad Director
November 11, 2021
International Programs continues to build its leadership team with the addition of
Dr. Angela Miller as the new director of Academic Programs Abroad.
Over the past 13 years, Dr. Miller has been a champion for global learning and engagement
for all students. She brings to LSU a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise
in advancing education abroad as well as her transformational leadership. She has
a proven record of accomplishment of building and growing education abroad through
strategies such as increasing student opportunities and participation and centering
diversity, equity, and inclusion. Throughout her career, she has managed faculty-led
programs, exchange agreements, and implemented policies and procedures that align
with education abroad best practices.
Dr. Miller earned her Ed.D. in educational leadership at Northern Arizona University
and her research specialization focuses on global learning in the undergraduate curriculum.
Impacted by her own undergraduate study abroad experience as a first-generation college
student, she knew then that she wanted to bring those types of transformational opportunities
to more students. “I knew after my first study abroad program, which was a study tour
to several European countries, that I wanted to contribute to preparing students for
success in the global marketplace.” Dr. Miller went on to develop and co-lead an interdisciplinary
study abroad program in India that ran for several years. “I realized the powerful
transformations that students experience abroad often alters the course of their lives
dramatically, and the experience stays with them throughout their lifetime. When a
student returns from abroad more focused, more confident, performing better in their
courses, and graduating on time, that is a clear indication that they are thriving
as a result of their study abroad experience.”
A champion for global learning and diversity, Dr. Miller has served on various diversity,
equity, and inclusion committees and is an active member of NAFSA: Association of
International Educators. She regularly presents at conferences on topics including
global learning, internationalization, diversity & inclusion, women in leadership,
and risk management. Dr. Miller believes that now more than ever, it is critical that
students are prepared to live and work in a globally interconnected world; to be able
to develop global perspectives, relationships, and are empowered to work across cultures
to help solve the problems facing humanity.
In her spare time, Dr. Miller enjoys mentoring others, hiking, reading, and traveling.
She looks forward to advancing Academic Programs Abroad here at LSU with great enthusiasm.
She will assume her role on November 15.
