Researchers discover how neurons code new memories
A team of researchers from Louisiana State University (Dr. Megan Papesh), UC San Diego, Barrow Neurological Institute, and Arizona State University, have recently discovered the method by which single neurons in the human brain code new memories. As published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they found that single neurons in the human hippocampus code new memories in a distributed pattern — neural activity for memories is coded by a small proportion of hippocampal neurons, rather than by one neuron specifically (e.g., grandmother cells).
