Building Bright Futures: Facilities Hosts EBR Students for Summer Learn & Earn Internships

This summer, three local high school students are gaining valuable hands-on experience as interns with the Planning, Design, and Construction Department within Facilities. Through the East Baton Rouge School System (EBRSS) Learn & Earn Internship Program, 11th and 12th grade students across East Baton Rouge Parish have the opportunity to explore career interests while earning wages, obtaining industry credentials, receiving course credit, and gaining mentorship from professionals throughout the Baton Rouge community.

During their eight-week internship, these rising leaders are shadowing architects, engineers, project managers, landscape architects, and interior designers to learn about their professions, participate in meetings, and visit active construction sites. The students are also contributing to a meaningful campus project by surveying and photographing campus crosswalks to develop a prioritized list of areas that need refreshing before the fall semester. Each day concludes with a reflection period where they journal about their experiences, lessons learned, and career insights.

In addition to gaining practical experience in fields they may pursue after graduation, the students are exploring LSU’s campus as they consider their future college choices. Beyond their work assignments, they have enjoyed campus tours, ice cream at the Dairy Store, and visits to the Campus Mounds and University Recreation Center (UREC).

Facilities is proud to partner with the EBR School System to provide these students with meaningful learning opportunities and looks forward to supporting the next generation of professionals and leaders.
