Area of Interest

Mineral and fluid diagenesis in sedimentary basins

On-going projects include: compositional systematics and geochemical evolution of shallow and deep formation waters; mineral buffering of fluid compositions; quantitative mass balances during water-rock interaction; and characterization of mineral-fluid diagenesis in freshwater aquifers.

Environmental geology, geochemistry, and hydrogeology

Much of my environmental work is focused here in Louisiana, where much fundamental research in environmental geology and geochemistry remains to be done. On-going projects include the study of the geochemistry of major inorganic solutes in surface river systems; the hydrogeology of fresh water, coastal-plain aquifers; and problems involved with the disposal of wastes derived from oil and gas production and chemical manufacturing.

Origin and migration of subsurface fluids in sedimentary basins

Current study areas include the deep-water Gulf of Mexico basin; North Slope foreland basin, Alaska; and the intracratonic Murray basin.  A wide variety of drives for fluid flow are occurring in some of these basins, including topographically-driven flow, density-driven flow, and flow related to overpressuring. Much of this work has direct applications to petroleum geology.
