Baton Rouge, La. — The LSU College of Science is hosting its first Geaux Science for Girls Story Time with LSU neurobiologist, Dr. Evanna Gleason, Saturday, December 8, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library on Goodwood Boulevard.

Geaux Science for Girls Story Time invites girls in pre-kindergarten through third grade to hear science-themed stories read by LSU women scientists followed by a fun hands-on science activity. The story time kicks off a series of Geaux Science for Girls events supported through generous funding from Halliburton.

"We are very excited to receive support from Halliburton for Geaux Science for Girls," said Cynthia Peterson, dean of the LSU College of Science. "Our goal is to inspire a new generation of women scientists, and I am grateful to have a partner like Halliburton to support us in this effort."

On December 8, Dr. Gleason will be reading Neuron Galaxy by Karen Littman, a story about a lonely little neuron that wants to connect with other neurons. Following the story, the girls will be able to meet Dr. Gleason and ask questions about the story and her work as an LSU scientist. Dr. Gleason and graduate students in LSU’s Department of Biological Sciences will also lead the girls in a fun activity with energy sticks to show how their bodies can produce energy.

“It’s important that we introduce girls to science at a young age,” said Dr. Gleason. “Not necessarily to get them to go into science, but to help them understand how their bodies and the world works.”
