BATON ROUGE, June 30, 2020 —

In the first 30 days of COVID-19 shutdown, LSU manufactured a wide range of PPE, or personal protective equipment. More than 20,000 protective gowns, 10,000 face shields, and thousands of gallons of hand sanitizer.

Also in the first 30 days, LSU set up two federally approved COVID-19 testing labs, one at LSU Health Shreveport (the Emerging Viral Threat, or EVT, lab) and one at LSU A&M in Baton Rouge (the River Road Testing Lab).

The LSU NCBRT/ACE also provided 200,000 bars of soap to state agencies.

LSU’s work to fight the pandemic continues.

To date, LSU has manufactured more than 38,000 tests and tested more than 25,000 residents for COVID-19.

The university has also received about $1 million in federal research and development awards to advance the university’s work on the epidemic.

The LSU NCBRT/ACE has trained 24,941 first responders across all 64 parishes in Louisiana, and Sea Grant has helped sell 25,000 pounds of fish and seafood for Louisiana fishermen through direct marketing efforts.

LSU now has more than 300 researchers back on its eight campuses across the state to continue working on COVID-19 challenges.
