Honors College Student Rohin Gilman Becomes LSU’s 38th Goldwater Scholar

March 29, 2021

Rohin Gilman has been selected as a 2021 Goldwater Scholar. The Goldwater Foundation was established by Congress in 1986. The Scholarship Program honoring Senator Barry Goldwater was designed to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue research careers in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering, and mathematics. This year the Goldwater Foundation awarded 410 scholarships, selecting from a pool of 1,256 outstanding undergraduates nominated by 438 institutions.

Gilman, an Ogden Honors College junior studying mathematics in the LSU College of Science with a dual degree in computer science in the LSU College of Engineering, was selected as a Goldwater Scholar on the basis of academic merit of  mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

“Rohin worked incredibly hard to translate high-level, theoretical math to a broad STEM audience. Our internal selection committee was impressed not only with his expertise but also his ability to communicate his findings and clearly so was the Goldwater Foundation.  We are proud to announce Rohin Gilman as LSU’s 38th Goldwater Scholar,” said Ogden Honors College Associate Dean Drew Lamonica Arms.

“Studying math at LSU has given me the opportunity to explore its various branches, including topics in both applied and pure mathematics,” Gilman says.  “Over the last three years, I have built a foundation that has allowed me to make significant progress on my research projects.”

His research stems from his interest in numerical methods. He has conducted research that demonstrates how the Chernoff Product Formula can be used to approximate solutions of initial value problems for fully non-linear differential equations, using Koopman’s global linearization approach. Rohin conducts his research under Dr. Frank Neubrander.

“Rohin’s numerical explorations and theoretical contributions are genuinely interesting, far-reaching, and the mathematical maturity required to perform this work is way beyond what can usually be expected from an undergraduate. He is an outstanding student who will excel in graduate studies in mathematical science at any of the top programs in the world. I am happy to see that the Goldwater Foundation recognized his unique talent and potential with this prestigious scholarship,” Dr. Neubrander said.

After graduation, Rohin plans to pursue a Ph.D. in mathematics and conduct research while teaching at the university level.

The Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation

Congress established the Barry Goldwater Scholarship in 1986 to honor Senator Barry Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years in the U.S. Senate. The scholarship was designed to alleviate a critical, current and future shortage of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians and engineers.

Office of Fellowship Advising

The Ogden Honors College Office of Fellowship Advising was created to assist students in applying for prestigious scholarships and fellowships, such as the Rhodes, Marshall, Gates, Mitchell, Udall, Truman and Goldwater awards. Students interested in applying for these and other scholarship opportunities or for more information on the office, contact Drew Lamonica Arms, director of fellowship advising, at fellowships@lsu.edu.
