Everett Craddock Receives Hollings Scholarship From the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

Ogden Honors College and Louisiana Service and Leadership (LASAL) student Everett Craddock, is a 2020 recipient of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship. The nationally competitive scholarship will provide Craddock with up to $19,000 in academic assistance and a 10-week, full-time paid internship at a NOAA facility during the summer.

Craddock is a junior from Lafayette, La. studying environmental engineering in the College of Engineering. There are a number of personal experiences that led him to selecting environmental engineering as his major, including watching his grandfather get their boat stuck in marsh mud because he no longer recognizes the canals he has navigated for fifty years. But becoming a LASAL scholar bolstered his passion and development in researching environmental issues. 

In 2019, Craddock worked in the Wetlands Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab with Dr. John White, where he processed wetland soil and water samples and reported the data collected to government agencies such as the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management. The data will be added to the Coastal Reference Monitoring System (CRMS) which observes changes in organic and chemical composition over time in order to monitor the status of coastal land loss and relative success of wetland restoration projects.

“I’m so pleased Everett sought out the Hollings Scholarship.  As a LASAL Scholar, Everett has combined his research interests with exploration of the social, political, and economic implications of coastal land loss.  The Hollings Scholarship will allow him to learn more about mitigation strategies and developments in protecting our coastal resources and communities, and I know he will take full advantage of the outstanding opportunities NOAA provides,” said Drew Lamonica Arms, Director of Fellowship Advising. 

In his future research, Craddock would like to develop predictive impact assessments that consider economic, social, and environmental impacts of future major weather events. “I believe that having the opportunity to conduct coastal research for a government organization at this point in my education would allow me to grow as an individual and as a scientist and help me along my path to protect the things I love most,” he said. He will use the scholarship funds to focus on his aspiring research goals.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship Program is designed to: increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; recruit and prepare students for public service careers with the NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the federal, state and local levels of government; and recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.
