Designing for Learning and Persistence

Educators are all in the business of changing minds: We help spark new memories, guide students in developing new skills, and invite our students to take new and different perspectives. With an understanding of some key principles about how the mind works, we can create learning experiences that are memorable, compelling and effective. But there is a complication: These evidence-based approaches often require more effort from students, not less, and without motivation to persist, students will miss out on the benefits of well-designed, evidence-based learning activities. In this interactive keynote address, Dr. Michelle Miller will discuss how to combine concepts from research in the psychology of learning, motivation, and academic persistence to promote deep and lasting learning.
