Transportation

Umeċ is easily accessible by plane, railway, bus, car, and ferry. The directions are listed below by form of transportation.

Please note that cash is not accepted on the local buses or the airport shuttle. Most major credit/debit cards are accepted, except on-line cards such as Maestro or Visa Electron.

Air travel

The quickest way to get to Umeċ from abroad or the southern region of Sweden is by plane. It takes just under one hour to fly from Stockholm to Umeċ City Airport, located only 4 kilometres from the city centre.

Scandinavian Airlines (www.sas.se) and Norwegian (www.norwegian.se) operate several daily flights to and from Arlanda International Airport outside of Stockholm. Malmö Aviation (www.malmoaviation.se) also offers frequent flight service via Stockholm Bromma Airport.

The airport shuttle (No. 80), offers regular bus service from Umeċ City Airport to the university and city centre. The cost for a one-way ticket is 40 SEK. Taxis are also available for quick access to your desired destination in Umeċ. A taxi trip between Umeċ City Airport and the city center cost approximately 200 SEK.

Railway/Train

SJ (www.sj.se) and Norrtċg (www.norrtag.se) offer train service to Umeċ. There are overnight trains and day trains, some of them connecting to bus lines.

By bus and car

A large number of bus lines depart and arrive at the central bus terminal near the Umeċ city centre. Länstrafiken (www.tabussen.nu) operates regional buses, which connect to other bus carriers. Y-buss (www.ybuss.se) offers affordable service from and to Stockholm.

If you go by car from the south part of Sweden, take the E4 northbound towards Uppsala/Sundsvall/Umeċ/Luleċ. Umeċ is situated roughly 650 km (405 miles) north of Stockholm. Under normal driving conditions this would be a seven hour drive. Parking areas can be found in several locations in central Umeċ. Parking regulations, including fees, can vary and are posted at each parking area.

By ferry

If you come from the Finnish side, there are daily ferries between Umeċ and Vasa (Finland). Transfer is available from the port in Holmsund but needs to be booked in advance and paid in cash (SEK or EUR).

Weather

The weather in Umeċ in mid-June can vary between sunny 20-25 °C (68-77 °F) to rainy 10 °C (50 °F). Regardless of the daytime weather the evenings are often cool, so pack an extra sweater and hopefully you won’t need it!

Currency

The currency in Sweden is the Swedish Krona (SEK). The exchange rate is around 7 SEK to 1 USD, or 9 SEK to 1 EUR. (2014.10.03). Forex exchange is available on Arlanda and Bromma Airports for those of you changing flights in Stockholm. There is also a local Forex exchange office nearby the Hotel Scandic Plaza.

However, almost all Swedish shops and restaurants accepts major credit/debit cards as VISA/American Express/Master Card etc. and surviving without cash on hand is not a problem. There are plenty of ATM/cash dispensers available if the need for cash should arise.

Tipping/gratuity is not customary in Sweden, but is welcomed for service well rendered!
