Mentoring

"Mentoring originates from a Greek word meaning endurance and is known to be one of the oldest forms of influence. In literature, it originates from the Greek tales of how the King of Ithaca would leave his son with a friend Mentor while he went out to war, giving Mentor the responsibilities of nurturing, building up and making a positive impact on the King's son.

Mentoring has inspired so much success and growth in individuals and communities and is the reason why many Mentoring Programs are being set up in schools and communities today."

Mentors function in four primary roles:

  1. Teacher - imparting knowledge or skill to the mentee by example or experience

  2. Counselor - exchanging opinions and ideas with the mentee to reach a decision or deliberate plan of action

  3. Intervener - influencing the mentee's attitudes and behaviors

  4. Sponsor - assuming responsibility for assisting the mentee in gaining greater academic success
