Louisiana State University receives recognition on Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Honor Roll

Baton Rouge, La – April 11, 2016 – Louisiana State University was recognized on Phi Theta Kappa’s Transfer Honor Roll as one of 40 colleges with dynamic transfer pathways.

According to the article published by Phi Theta Kappa, schools were judged based on a multitude of criteria, among them being the support that students receive from the universities’ transfer programs, as well the opportunities available for transfer student engagement.

During this year, LSU Transfer Student Programs (TSP) has introduced new initiatives to improve the transfer student experience. At the end of the fall 2015 semester, TSP coordinated the establishment of a Non-Traditional Student Organization at LSU. The Non-Traditional Student Organization provides leadership opportunities for non-traditional students and allows them to connect with other students on campus.

In addition, TSP facilitates LSU’s Chapter of Tau Sigma, a national honor society that recognizes and promotes the academic excellence and campus involvement of transfer students. At the beginning of this semester, 27 transfer students were inducted and three were elected to Executive board positions.

In fall of 2016, TSP will offer a variety of different programs and resources to help transfer students find success at LSU. Transfer students will have access to a monthly Transfer Student Newsletter that will inform them of resources and upcoming opportunities available. Another resource available to transfer students is Tiger Transition Team, which will feature a transfer specific cohort that will specifically help transfer students navigate their first semester at LSU.  In addition, transfer students will have multiple opportunities for connecting with other students and professional staff members at TSP Connections and First Friday Breakfasts, held monthly throughout the year.  Through TSP’s Transfer Leadership Institute, transfer students will have the opportunity to attend professional development workshops, as well as discover possible career options.

Ramon Lopez, assistant director of LSU First Year Experience, coordinates LSU’s Transfer Student Programs. Lopez along with Stephan Martinez, a recent recipient of the LSU Phi Theta Kappa Tiger Transfer Scholarship to LSU, have been working to establish the first Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association on campus. Lopez initially started exploring the idea of establishing an alumni Chapter at LSU during the Phi Theta Kappa Honor roll application process.  Lopez said, “After doing some research, we realized that if established, an alumni Chapter would be the first of its kind in Louisiana and could improve opportunities for transfer students at our state flagship institution and their community.” The establishment of a Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association would be a resourceful addition to LSU Transfer Student Programs.
