University Lakes Project “Our Lakes Fest!” Kicks Off New Round of Opportunities for Community Input

August 11, 2021

Our Lakes FestMore than 300 area residents participated in the University Lakes Project’s “Our Lakes Fest!” event on Sunday, Aug. 8. The event, focused on engaging the community in plans to restore the lakes surrounding LSU’s campus, was held at BREC’s Milford Wampold Memorial Park and on the lawn of the Baton Rouge Gallery.

“Our Lakes Fest!” offered hands-on activities with area artists, water activity enthusiasts, birders and more throughout the afternoon. Attendees were encouraged to share their input on project plans via interactive stations.

Preliminary designs and materials, which were showcased at the event, are available for community input through Aug. 31, 2021. Residents can provide input on what kind of activities they want at the lakes via this survey. Opinions on potential lake edge configurations can be shared via this survey

“Our Lakes Fest!” was the most recent event focused on seeking public involvement in the planning and design of improvements and amenities around the University Lakes. The project team is refining and implementing the lakes master plan completed in 2016. The four key project goals are:

  • Goal 1: Deepen the lakes to provide a more sustainable aquatic system.
  • Goal 2: Provide increased flood protection for upstream and downstream communities.
  • Goal 3: Enhance environmental performance to create improved natural habitat.
  • Goal 4: Improve and diversify recreational uses while improving safety for walkers, runners and bicyclists.

The coalition that was formed to restore the lakes includes the State of Louisiana, the City of Baton Rouge and Parish of East Baton Rouge, BREC, LSU and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation, with a joint venture of Brailsford & Dunlavey and CSRS serving as project advisor. The University Lakes Project is being implemented by University Lakes LLC, which was established by the LSU Real Estate and Facilities Foundation, an affiliate of the LSU Foundation.
