03/30/2021
BATON ROUGE – Bryan-Paul Frost, professor of Political Science at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will deliver the keynote address for the Eric Voegelin Institute’s Spring Conference on “Reason and Revolution” on Friday, April 9, from 3:30-5 p.m. at the French House. His lecture will discuss the writings of French political philosopher Alexis de Tocqueville on revolution and their meaning for today. The event is free and open to the public, though because of covid restrictions guests must register beforehand at www.lsu.edu/voegelin/events. The event will be webcast simultaneously on Zoom.

Frost is the BORSF Endowed Professor of Political Science at the University of Louisiana Lafayette, where he teaches political philosophy, international relations, politics and literature, and comparative politics. He received his education from St. John’s College and the University of Toronto. He has edited and contributed to several books, including “Philosophy, History and Tyranny: Reexamining the Debate between Leo Strauss and Alexandre Kojève,” and “History of American Political Thought.” Additionally, he has published work on authors from Cicero to Emerson. A crawfish reception will follow Frost’s talk.

On Saturday, April 10, the conference will hold several sessions between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.  Panelists include Gabrielle Stanton Ray of Tulane University and Albert Samuels of Southern University, as well as Andrea Conque of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Jeremy Mhire of Louisiana Tech University. All sessions will be held at the French House, home of the LSU Ogden Honors College. Again, please register ahead to attend, at the website indicated above.

“The theme of our annual conference, ‘Reason and Revolution,’ was chosen almost two years ago by our student reading group and presciently anticipated popular demands for radical change or rational reform of the contemporary social order,” said James Stoner, director of the Voegelin Institute. “We hope these talks, the classic texts they consider, and the discussion they provoke will bring much-needed perspective to contemporary debates.”

The Eric Voegelin Institute, named for one of LSU’s original Boyd Professors and a scholar of international recognition and acclaim, is a humanities and social science research institute devoted to the revitalization of teaching and understanding of the great works of civilization.  Co-sponsoring the event is the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization that works to instill an understanding of and appreciation for America’s founding principles.
