BATON ROUGE – In U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 edition of Best Colleges, LSU is ranked in the top tier for “Best National Universities” for the 13th-straight year, and the undergraduate petroleum engineering program ranks 2nd overall.

LSU is ranked 36th among flagship universities nationwide – ahead of other flagships such as West Virginia University, University of Rhode Island and the University of Nevada – and is ranked 71st among public universities – ahead of public peers such as Kansas State University and Oklahoma State University.

LSU remains as the highest ranked public university in Louisiana, and in the SEC, LSU ranks ahead of the University of Arkansas, University of Mississippi and Mississippi State University.

“It’s an honor to be consistently recognized among Tier 1 universities nationwide and as the leading public university in Louisiana by U.S. News & World Report, especially in a year when so many higher education institutions are really struggling due to the pandemic. However, rankings such as these are not how we measure our success,” said LSU Interim President Thomas C. Galligan Jr. “Instead, our success at LSU is measured by our students’ success, our faculty’s achievements, and the positive impact our research has in our community, state, nation, and world—and by that measure, I have no doubt that our great university is among the very best anywhere.”

In the 2021 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges “Best National Universities,” LSU is tied with six other universities – Colorado State University, Michigan Technological University, Oregon State University, Quinnipiac University, Rutgers University – Camden, and University of Alabama at Birmingham.

U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 edition of Best Colleges assesses 1,452 U.S. bachelor's degree-granting institutions on 17 measures of academic quality. The National Universities category, in which LSU is ranked, consists of the 389 institutions
In other rankings, LSU appeared on the Best Colleges for Veterans, Best Value Schools, Top Performers on Social Mobility and “A-Plus Schools for B Students” lists.

In program-specific rankings, LSU’s undergraduate petroleum engineering program ranks #2 in the county. Other LSU undergraduate programs ranked this year include engineering, business and computer science.
