It also placed 14th in Acceleration, 11th in Skidpad, 15th in Autocross, 11th in Endurance, and ninth in Fuel Efficiency.

This year’s competition saw 51 teams compete at the Michigan International Speedway. The LSU team is composed of 25 active members, but only 15 were able to attend due to COVID restrictions. LSU Formula SAE Captain Josh Brooks has been on the team since 2017 and was happy to see the team finally place in the top 10 after all these years.

“It felt amazing to see the team finally break into the top 10,” he said. “I have watched our team innovate and improve on our cars year to year so that each car is better and faster than the last. It’s rewarding to see our hard work pay off.”

Brooks, who is a senior in mechanical engineering, hopes next year’s team can do even better.

“This team has been through a lot and has come together to achieve our goal,” he said. “I have always known we have one of the fastest cars in the United States, so it was really nice to finally be able to prove it. We are already hard at work to prepare next year’s car to do even better.”

The competition is an engineering education competition that requires performance demonstration of vehicles in a series of events, both off-track and on-track, against the clock. Each competition gives teams the chance to demonstrate their creativity and engineering skills in comparison to those from other universities around the world.
