2008 – 2009: Development of bionematicide for biological control of root-knot nematodes in fruticulture at the region of Janaúba, Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Description: The objective of this project is to develop a biological control product and process of production and application of this product, to control nematodes affecting fruticulture and other crops (such as sugar cane, coffee, vegetables, and others). The product was developed and results were tested from biotechnological researches.  It is based on a vegetal substrate that contains spores of the bacteria Pasteuriapenetrans, the fungus Pochoniachlamydosporia, and of some rhizobacterias. Phytonematodes are responsible for losses of 10 to 20% of yield production in crops in Brazil. Cost of nematode control is based on chemical products that are classified as extremely toxic by the Ministry of Agriculture. The result of this project introduced a new technology and a new method of application that allowed the biological control of the nematodes.  The product was not toxic to human beings or to the environment. Additionally, the new product will cost less than the actual chemical control, which is vital to farmers.

Area of research:

In my research I will study the influence of soil texture and profile within alluvial cotton fields in Louisiana on population development and damage potential of the Rotylenchulus reniformis.

The objectives of this research are:

  • To evaluate the influence of soil texture on reproduction and pathogenicity of Rotylenchulus reniformis on cotton.

  • To develop management zones for cotton fields in Louisiana infested with the R. reniformis.
