The CIMM Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) project is a nine- or ten-week summer program where students work collaboratively on topics related to advanced manufacturing and materials research. CIMM research addresses the scientific and technological barriers relevant to two broad classes of manufacturing methods: (1) Multi-scale forming and replication for high-throughput manufacturing and (2) 3-D Laser-based Printing for adaptive manufacturing. Students will be integrated into ongoing research projects in state of the art facilities in an environment of peer and interinstitutional mentoring and collaboration.

Each student will receive a $4500 stipend, free housing in university residence halls (if needed), and up to $400 travel expense reimbursement, meal allowance (campus specific).

The students will be selected to join research groups at one of the three Universities: Louisiana State University, Louisiana Tech University, and Southern University at Baton Rouge.

To qualify for the 2019 CIMM REU program, you must be an undergraduate at a two-or four-year institution, must have a minimum GPA of 2.75, be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident, and consider a research-related career or graduate school in a science major.

To be considered for the CIMM REU program, you must do all the following:

  • submit an online application
  • submit a 500-word application essay that includes a description of your academic background, the reason of your interest in this program, and your future career plans. The essay should also cover how you will benefit from this summer research experience
  • Send a copy of your official college transcript
  • One letter of recommendation
