My research focuses on sugarcane mosaic, a disease that historically has had a great impact on the Louisiana sugarcane industry. The current incidence, diversity, and distribution of virus strains causing mosaic will be determined from field surveys. In addition, the sugarcane breeding population will be evaluated for resistance to detected virus strains. Past instances of change in the virus strain composition caused dramatic effects on once resistant sugarcane varieties, so maintaining adequate resistance within the breeding population is essential to continue to produce disease resistant varieties.
