LSU School of Veterinary Medicine gives out $215,325 in scholarships and awards at 44th annual Awards & Honors Banquet

BATON ROUGE. LA—On April 26, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine hosted the 44th annual Awards and Honors Banquet in the SVM Auditorium and gave out $215,325 in scholarships and awards. The banquet was sponsored in part by Nestlé Purina Pet Care and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association (LVMA).

 

Both faculty and staff awards were bestowed, and students received monetary awards, memberships to professional organizations, journal subscriptions, plaques, certificates and veterinary medicine manuals and supplies. Since 2004, the LSU SVM has distributed more than $2.4 million in scholarships and awards thanks to the generosity of private citizens, foundations, organizations and corporations.

 

Faculty Service Award 

The School of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Service Award was presented to Stephanie Johnson, LCSW, assistant professor in the department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. An honorarium and inscribed plaque are presented to a faculty member who, in the opinion of his or her fellow faculty, has made significant contributions to the service aspects of the School of Veterinary Medicine. Johnson joined the LSU SVM faculty in 1998 and serves as the LSU SVM’s counselor for faculty, staff, students and hospital clients in addition to her role as a faculty member

 

Distinguished Scholar Award

The School of Veterinary Medicine Faculty Distinguished Scholar Award was presented to Arthur Penn, PhD, professor in the department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. An honorarium and inscribed plaque are presented to a faculty member who, in the opinion of his or her fellow faculty, has made significant contributions to the research at the School of Veterinary Medicine

 

Zoetis Animal Health Distinguished Teacher Awards

The School of Veterinary Medicine Teaching Award is presented to the faculty member nominated by each class for the Zoetis Animal Health Distinguished Teacher Award. The class of 2018 nominated Renee Carter, DVM (LSU SVM 2000), DACVO, associate professor of ophthalmology in the department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS). Dr. Carter joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2016. The class of 2019 nominated Kirk Ryan, DVM, DACVIM, associate professor of companion animal medicine in VCS. Dr. Ryan joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2006. The class of 2020 nominated Shannon Dehghanpir, DVM (LSU SVM 2013), DACVP, assistant professor of clinical pathology in the department of Pathobiological Sciences. Dr. Dehghanpir joined the LSU SVM faculty in 2017. The class of 2021 nominated Michelle Osborn, PhD, assistant professor in the department of Comparative Biomedical Sciences. Dr. Osborn joined the faculty in 2016.

 

Dr. Shannon Dehghanpir also received the Zoetis Animal Health Distinguished Teacher Award. This award is bestowed to a faculty member to recognize outstanding teaching as judged by the responsiveness of his or her students. As part of this honor, Dr. Dehghanpir will be the master of ceremonies at the 2019 Awards & Honors Banquet and carried the mace at the 2018 commencement ceremony.

 

House Officer of the Year Award

Joshua Sparago, DVM, companion animal surgery intern in VCS, received the House Officer of the Year Award. Dr. Sparago began his internship in July 2017 and completed it in June 2018. He will begin a three-year small animal internal medicine residency in July 2018 at the LSU SVM.

Shannon Hansen (Class of 2019), from Peoria, Ariz., received the M. Darnell Besch and Dr. Everett Besch Scholarship and the Audrey Engelhart Scholarship; and
