Job Description: PAWS Chicago is seeking Veterinary Surgeons who will be responsible for the care of all surgical patients, ensuring all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients. The ideal Veterinarian has a deep, personal passion for the PAWS Chicago mission of building No Kill communities, being part of solving Chicago's pet overpopulation challenge and is committed to serving homeless animals of the Chicago area.

PAWS Chicago was fully renovated as of September 2020 with state-of-the-art surgical suites, equipment and medical facilities. PAWS Chicago offers competitive benefits including 401k, Continuing Education reimbursement and a sign-on bonus. Full-time candidates will have a 4-day work week.

This position has a nearly exclusive focus on high quality high volume spay/neuter surgeries and occasional other soft tissue surgery. Typical surgery case mix includes dental extractions, mass removals, amputations, wound repairs and optic surgeries, and possible emergency surgeries. The potential exists for additional interdepartmental work in the Shelter Medicine program or Community Medicine programs. Part-time is also available.

Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical and medical (i.e., ultrasounds) care for shelter animals based on need and capabilities. Surgical procedures are primarily spay/neuter, but may include dental extractions, mass removals, amputations, wound repairs and optic surgeries and emergency surgeries.
  • Manage anesthetic and surgical complications, report all complications for surgeries completed to clinic management, and support a culture of continuous improvement
  • Make reasonable medical decisions based on available resources
  • Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols, recommending updates, innovations and improvements to management as relevant.
  • Communicate, consult and collaborate with Shelter Medicine veterinarians and technicians, as well as Clinic colleagues
  • Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members

Requirements

  • Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of Illinois.
  • At least one year spay/neuter surgery experience Able to perform cryptorchid neuters and difficult spay surgeries such as pyometra, dystocia, in heat, obese and large patients.
  • Mobile surgical (spay/neuter or other) experience not required, but preferred.
  • Demonstrated passion and prior experience working with homeless animals and/or underserved communities preferred.
  • Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Services

Provide technical assistance to shelter veterinarians and communicate regarding changes in patient condition, results of diagnostic tests and procedures and treatment questions. Position responsibilities include shelter animal intake and evaluation procedures; diagnostics; health assessment of shelter animals; care of shelter animals including emergency and intensive care as required; restraint; patient and equipment preparation for diagnostic procedures, monitoring, and evaluating shelter animals; administration of medication; catheter placement; maintenance of IV's. Job Description: PAWS Chicago is currently seeking Veterinary Surgical Prep Technicians who will be based out of the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic which was fully renovated in 2020 and provides state-of-the-art surgical as well as medical care.  PAWS has been providing low-cost spay and neuter services, as well as vaccinations and other forms of wellness, to the public since 2000. This Clinic plays a crucial part in reducing pet overpopulation and homelessness in Chicago. The Surgical Prep Technician assists the Veterinarian during medical and surgical procedures, anesthetizes and intubates patients prior to surgery, monitors anesthesia, administers vaccines and dispenses medication as prescribed by the veterinarian.
