The organization was started in Fall 2005 in an effort to connect, educate, support, and develop students, faculty, and professionals interested in higher education.

HESPA is in response to a need for higher education students to collaborate and build community among themselves. It is an organization formed by graduate students to assist graduate students. The organization is open to all students and professionals that contribute to the field of higher education through professional practice or academic rigor.

Some activities to be held by HESPA include:
• Higher education orientation
• Mentoring
• Guest speaker series
• Research presentations/brown bags
• Networking
