BATON ROUGE - The LSU College of Science congratulates Associate Dean of Academic Services and Philip & Foymae West Distinguished Professor in Chemistry, Dr. Andrew Maverick, on being named a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS). He and 58 other new fellows will be honored at the society’s fall national meeting on August 20 in Boston. Dr. Maverick joined ACS when he was a graduate student and is celebrating 40 years of membership this year.

“I have tried to be active in both research and service during my career, so it is very nice to see those efforts recognized,” said Maverick. “I know many other members of ACS who have impressive achievements in both of these areas, so it is a pleasant surprise to be one of those chosen.”

Dr. Maverick joins six other LSU faculty members who have also been named fellows of ACS: Isiah M. Warner (2009), James G. Traynham (2009), Saundra Y. McGuire (2010), William H. Daly (2010), George G. Stanley (2011), John W. Finley (2011).

The fellowship program started in 2009 to honor ACS members who made outstanding achievements in and contributions to science, the profession and ACS. Dr. Maverick acknowledges LSU’s effort to provide opportunities for faculty to give back to community. He is being recognized for his service with events like ChemDemo and Super Science Saturday. Both events require extensive team efforts to reach out to hundreds of k-12 students interested in science.

“LSU understands that such programs are not trivial or inexpensive but in addition to the direct positive effects they have in the community, they have led to extensive national recognition for LSU,” said Dr. Maverick.

His research includes making polynuclear “host” molecules with internal cavities and exploring the kinds of “guest” molecules that will fit inside and whether they will undergo unusual reactions while they are bound. He has also been honored with the Charles E. Coates Award from the ACS Baton Rouge Local Section in 2009 and the LSU Distinguished Faculty Award in 2004.

“LSU has given me the opportunity to carry out research together with talented undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and professional colleagues. A research group is a collaboration, so this award is really about the many contributions of my students and others to our success,” expressed Dr. Maverick.

For 140 years, ACS has strived to improve people’s lives through the transforming power of chemistry by advancing the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners for the benefit of Earth and its people. Visit https://www.acs.org/content/acs/en.html to learn more about ACS.
