One degree, Two careers...
GeauxTeach Offers Infinite Possibilities
Quality math and science teachers are in high demand. GeauxTeach allows students to pursue an undergraduate degree in biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics AND earn secondary teaching certification at the same time. No additional hours are required, since elective hours are used for education courses. Upon completing the GeauxTeach Program, you will have a BS degree in science or math AND be both certified and highly qualified to teach in that subject area. Although teaching is the goal for many of our students, some choose to pursue this concentration to become a distinguished communicator and to set themselves apart from other students who plan to enroll in graduate or professional schools.
Take a Test Drive
Freshmen and sophomores can “test-drive” GeauxTeach before making a commitment by enrolling in “Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Math and Science Teaching (BASC 2010), a one credit hour introductory course. In this course, you will explore the theory and practice of inquiry-based instruction and work collaboratively to teach two lessons to elementary students in local schools.
Juniors and seniors who are interested in trying GeauxTeach can dual enroll in Step 1: Inquiry Approaches to Math and Science Teaching (BASC 2010) and Step 2: Inquiry-Based Math and Science Lesson Design (BASC 2011). Special sections have been reserved so students who are further along in their degrees can finish the Secondary Education Concentration without extending their graduation. In these courses, students work collaboratively to teach three lessons to 6th, 7th, or 8th grade students in local middle schools.
