Dr Anne M Sauer
Global Sector Leader, Adjacencies, Sealed Air, Charlotte, NC
Dr Anne M Sauer was born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in 2000 in Chemistry with a minor in Psychology at Louisiana State University. LSU seemed to be the perfect home for Anne as she also decided to return for her PhD degree in the Department of Chemistry. She joined the organic division and worked under the direction of Professor Crowe (Chemistry), Professor Laine (Biochemistry), and Professor Henderson (Entomology). During Anne’s time as a graduate student at LSU, she received multiple awards including the Procter & Gamble Award for Most Academically Distinguished Beginning Graduate Student in the Department of Chemistry, the Outstanding Teaching Award, the Troy H. Middleton Scholarship, and the Procter & Gamble Research Fellowship. She defended her dissertation titled, “Enantioselective Syntheses and Chemical Investigations of Plant‐ Derived Bioactive Volatile Compounds” and graduated in 2005. Anne was asked about what she appreciated most about her time at LSU as a graduate student in the Department of Chemistry; in response she listed three things:
- An appropriate amount of creative freedom to direct her own research efforts
- The flexibility to adjust approaches when needed; and
- The opportunity to work on chemistry projects rooted in application testing.
While working in industry as a PhD Research Chemist, Anne decided to enroll in LSU’s Flores’ Professional MBA program to broaden her business acumen. She graduated with this degree in 2009, while simultaneously working at Albemarle. In 2016, Anne relocated from Baton Rouge to accept a position at Albemarle Corporation in Charlotte, NC where she was the Global Director for R&D and Business Development for Lithium. In this role, Dr Sauer led a global team tasked with the successful launch of next generation lithium-based battery materials.
With thirteen years combined Industrial R&D and Corporate Development / Strategy experience, Anne embarked on a new opportunity joining Sealed Air’s Food Care team in July 2018 as their Global Sector Lead of Adjacent Markets.
The merger of Anne’s technical R&D expertise with business acumen has been integral in the identification of new opportunities enabling her to effectively build and champion strategically sound business cases for emerging areas of science & technology, drive revenue creation through the launch of products across a variety of diverse markets, and lead key functional teams through functional transformation & integration processes.
Dr Sauer regrets nothing in the path she took on her way to her success. To those prospective and current graduate students in the Department of Chemistry, she advises them to “never stop learning and don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.”
